Tips and Tricks proven over the years:
- Watch the "Wind Jigging Action", when you notice it stop abruptly, you know a
fish has picked up your bait.
- Put your "Wind Tip-ups" down wind from you, and face the back of your "Wind
Tip-ups" into the wind...this will cause your unit to catch more wind and cause
more jigging. (This will also cause you to have the wind at your back...a nice
thing during a brisk day on the ice.)
- When storing, place hook on "eye side" of flag close to the tip-up. Wind the
line tight and tighten the wing nut...NO TANGLES!!!
- Minnows, which are just barely hooked under the dorsal fin, will stay alive
much longer than those which are hooked deeply.
- Put you "Wind Tip-up's" bait at different depths until the fish are found, then
move them all to the same depth. (Remember, the bobber marks the bottom.)
- If using a large golden shiner or sucker, try cutting (or biting...if you are macho)
the tail almost all the way through (sounds gross, but works). The fish think it
is wounded and "easy" prey.
- Place your "Wind Tip-ups" in a line every 20 yards or so...it is easier to watch
them. Make multiple lines if fishing with many at one time...will become like the
spokes of a wheel down wind of you. In Wisconsin, we can have 3 Tip-ups per
person. We go sometimes with 5 - 6 people. One can cover a lot of water and
have great action.
